HE DIDN’T know how long he sat on his kitchen floor, but at the edge of his thoughts he heard a familiar female voice call his name. For a brief second he thought it was his mother. That hope was shredded in an instant as reality took delight in torturing him with the cold truth.

“Orin?” The voice was closer, and he felt a draft of cool air. “Orin!”

The sound of someone rushing across the floor preceded a pair of New Balance running shoes filling the tiny bit of ground he could see from the corner of his right eye.

“Orin!” He resisted the call and the small, yet strong hand trying to pull his head up. “Orin!”

The cry became more desperate and his aversion to hear others suffer caused him to sit back enough to let Jeanette know he wasn’t dead.

“What happened? What’s wrong?” She hugged him like a child clutching a teddy bear. “Sweetie, please. Talk to me!”

The tears returned and he tried to pull away but couldn’t. Failing to free himself, he let his head sink into her soft gray sweatshirt.

“He... he... he’s... g-gone.”

“I know, sweetie.” She hugged him tighter and began to rock gently. “I’m so sorry. So sorry. I know you miss them.”

He tried to speak, but it came out as a sob that set his body convulsing again. Jeanette sat on the floor with him, gently massaging the back of his head, cooing softly in his ear. Finally, he gained control and stopped shaking. This time when he tried to sit up, she released her hold.

Orin ran a hand over the wet spot on her shoulder. “Sorry.”

“Shut up.” She brought his fingers to her lips. “Are you okay?”

“No.” His attempt to fight back the tears failed, but he managed to keep from breaking down totally. “He left. I... made him leave.”

“Shh, sweetie. It wasn’t your fault. How can you blame yourself?”

Frustration helped him focus. “Thomas. I’m talking about Thomas.”

“What?” Jeanette sat back against the cabinets.

“He came here after he found out about his parents’ house.” Orin struggled to maintain his slim grip on his composure. “He... we kissed. Then I... I....”

Closing his eyes, he shook his head. All the years he’d dreamt of kissing Thomas, how could he have let it end like that?

“He told me he loved me. But I... I’m too stupid.”

Movement caused him to open his eyes. Jeanette crouched in front of him. “What happened? Start at the beginning.”

The way she reverted to lawyer mode nearly made him smile. He took a deep breath and, with the help of a few probing questions, managed to tell her everything.

“That dumbass.” She paced the small kitchen. Every time she reached the back door, the sun shining through the glass turned her blond hair almost white, giving her the appearance of an angry angel. “How could he be so stupid?”

“He did what I asked.”

She spun around and pointed at him. “No, you told him if he loved you not to break your heart.”

Orin pulled out a chair.
